Movie English Class

1. What do you think she meant when she said “It looks like this, one tribe drifting quality to another’s territory without respect, as if to claim what isn’t theirs. An outsider looking it would never see it. But we could feel it. Something was coming.” Give examples and details from the movie.

Ø  Answer: There were some racial groups outside of the school. When they contacted with others, they began to fight with the fights. Then a black came to there to stir up. As a result, he betrayed his companion because of joining gang. This incident is strong related to gang.

2. What is voluntary integration? And what some of the Wilson High School teachers think about voluntary integration? Do you agree or disagree with the attitudes these teachers? Why? Include details from the movie.

Ø  Answer: What made voluntary integration is International Convention on the Elimination of all Forms of Racial Discrimination. These teachers disappointed this voluntary integration because various kinds of people who had like drag and gun started to come to school. As a result, teachers didn’t think that educate them in earnest. I disagree with these teachers attitude because teacher’s work is teaching. At least these teachers should show interests in students.

3. What do you think Mie Gies was trying to say to the students when she said this? How do you think you could put this statement into practice in your own life?

Ø  Answer: I was so impressed to hear that I am not hero and you are hero. These words indicate that it is important to continue to do something which you want to. In my case, I want to be an English teacher in the future. This is my dream for me. Therefore, I have to study English hard every day for the purpose of achieving my dream.  

4. What was the purpose of doing a toast for change? Do you think it was effective in helping the students? Use detail from the movie to support your answer.

 Ø  Answer: Erin and students made a toast for change. That word of change included various meanings which was never give up changing what is social, present situation. Everyone will be new person in a good sense. This must be the purpose of a toast. I thought that a toast was so effective for all of the students because student’s smile increased by making toast little by little.    

5. Why did the students decided to call their book “Freedom writers?” Give specific examples from the movie.

Ø  Answer: Erin and students decided to write daily about their minds. After that they made a book based on the daily for the purpose of moving their school and negative the chief of subject. The name of freedom writers comes from Freedom riders. He is famous brave person to get civil rights. That is why they decided to call it freedom writers. This is not just book. In short, freedom writers represent Erin and students. This book must include the meaning that you keep trying serious and you will find a way out.
